Is SAFE a part of the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence?
No. SAFE was founded in 1997 as a program of the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, but separated and incorporated as an independent organization in October 2006.

Do SAFE advocates work for DC Superior Court?
No. Although our advocates work in DC Superior Court. we are not employees of the court system or of the DC government. We are a fully independent nonprofit organization.

Does SAFE provide legal representation?
No. SAFE does not have lawyers on staff to represent clients. However, we have access to networks of pro bono lawyers through other agencies we work with, so we may be able to assist clients in finding representation if they need it.

Can you provide services to clients who do not speak English?
Yes. SAFE currently employs three advocates who are bilingual in Spanish and English. We also have an account with a telephone translation service that grants us access to over 160 additional languages.

What are the DVICs?
The DVICs are DC's two Domestic Violence Intake Centers. The main DVIC is located at DC Superior Court, with a Southeast Satellite office at Greater Southeast Community Hospital (DVICSE), and both locations are dedicated entirely to providing a variety of legal and social services for victims of domestic violence. The DVICs are a unique multi-agency initiative, including staff from several governmental and non-governmental organizations: the US Attorney's Office, the Office of the Attorney General, the Metropolitan Police Department, Women Empowered Against Violence (WEAVE), SAFE, Legal Aid, Ramona's Way, and the Center for Child Protection and Family Support. SAFE works in collaboration with all of these agencies to ensure seamless provision of services to each client that we see, so that all of their various needs can be met by visiting one centralized location.
